Sam Bloom

Sam Bloom's story is one of inspiration, resilience and strength, as told in her bestselling book “Penguin Bloom” which is now a major motion picture. Sam is also a popular motivational speaker and tells the story of how she overcame the darkest days of her life with the help of a little magpie friend named Penguin.

Best known internationally as a three-time World Para Surfing champion, Sam Bloom’s story of resilience and courage has moved audiences around the world after it was adapted into the Australian number 1 box office hit film ‘Penguin Bloom’ starring Naomi Watts.

While holidaying in Thailand with her family in 2013, Sam suffered a near-fatal accident after falling through a rotten balcony railing and falling six metres onto the concrete below. With a shattered spine, ruptured lungs and severe bleeding on the brain, Sam refused to accept her fate and the possibility that she may never walk again.

But after her family took in an injured baby magpie, who her sons affectionally named Penguin, Sam found inspiration to transform her attitude around recovery and find new ways to reconnect with her love of sport.

Since then, Sam has become an inspiration to all aspiring athletes. A two-time Australian, Hawaiian and World Para Surfing champion, Sam has also won two Oceania KL1 paracanoe championships. She was nominated for the Surfing Australia Female Surfer of the Year Award in 2019, before being awarded the Surfing Australia Female Para Surfer of the Year in 2022.

With a story of remarkable growth and resilience, Sam’s journey of recovery was captured by her acclaimed photographer husband Cameron Bloom. Showing the tender bond between Sam and Penguin, the captivating photographs would go on to inspire the international best selling book ‘Penguin Bloom: The Odd Little Bird Who Saved a Family’, written by New York Times best-selling author Bradley Trevor Greive.

Published worldwide in 14 languages, the book was later adapted into an Australian film starring Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln. A domestic box office success, the movie also trended worldwide through its distribution with Netflix.

A role model to all, Sam commits her spare time to a range of spinal cord injury charities around the world. She is also a global ambassador for Wings For Life and ambassador to Tourism Australia.

With a moving story about loss and overcoming incredible challenges to become world champion, Sam’s ability to harness the power of nature and family is nothing short of remarkable. Sam’s visually engaging keynote presentations are sure to resonate with any audience.
