A versatile entertainer, celebrated for his career in comedy and passion for architecture
Tim Ross has had a resounding career in the entertainment industry, spanning decades of notable achievements. His journey commenced with the parody band, Black Rose. Teaming up with Merrick Watts, the dynamic duo graced the airwaves on Triple J before taking the prestigious breakfast slot on the newly formed Nova 96.9.
During their fruitful 8 years at Nova, Merrick and Rosso cultivated an impressive array of accomplishments. Their creative collaboration birthed numerous TV shows, including a late-night talk show which won an Aria award for Best Comedy Release, with Tim also receiving the accolade of GQ Man of the Year. He has also hosted both of the number one breakfast and drive shows in Sydney.
While Tim may be best known for his contributions to television and radio, his devotion to architecture and design has remained a steadfast passion throughout his career. In recent years, he has captivated audiences with his live performance series, Man About the House, staged within architecturally significant buildings and homes worldwide.
A passionate advocate for issues in Australian architecture and design, Tim has also received recognition as an honorary member of the Australian Institute of Architects. His first two-part series, Streets of Your Town, debuted on ABC TV in 2016, receiving resounding acclaim, and quickly emerging as the network’s most watched arts program for the year.
Airing in 2021, Tim’s TV series, Designing A Legacy, explores the profound impact of modern architectural marvels on Australian families. The mass of rave reviews in response prompted a second series to be aired on ABC in 2023, delving into the broader landscape of Australian architecture.
In addition to his television ventures, Tim has written several books, including his memoir, Mum had a Kingswood, and the evocative collections, The Rumpus Room, and Scorcher, which embrace Australian life told through short stories. His photographic works, such as ‘Motel – Images of Australia on Holidays’, and ‘Chuck a U-ey – Images of Australians and their cars’, offer compelling insights into the nation’s past through exploring the National Archives.
Renowned for his skilful interviewing and hosting skills, Tim has hosted various podcasts, including ‘Constant’ for the National Art Gallery, Built with Brickworks film series, ‘Cars that Made Australia’ with Nine podcasts, and his personal favourite, ‘Summer Breeze’, alongside his best friend Kit Warhurst. Tim’s unique rapport and humour were on display during his sold-out show hosting Kevin McCloud In Conversation at the Sydney Opera House, further affirming his status as a highly accomplished entertainer.
