Karina Carvalho

Trusted News Anchor and Broadcast Journalist with a Passion for People and World Affairs

Karina Carvalho is a seasoned Australian news presenter and journalist whose global outlook and calm command of live television have earned her a trusted place in households across the country.

Her journey began far from the newsroom in Sri Lanka, where civil unrest forced her family to start anew in Australia. This early upheaval gave Karina a deep awareness of social justice, migration, and resilience, themes that now shape her approach to storytelling.

Karina’s broadcast career launched after she graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. A bold move to London led to roles at the BBC, including producing for international current affairs programs and covering major sporting interviews across the UK and US.

Returning to Australia, Karina swiftly climbed the ranks at the ABC, eventually becoming one of the country’s youngest prime-time news anchors. From leading bulletins in Perth and Brisbane to co-hosting News Breakfast in Melbourne, she has guided viewers through breaking news, global crises, natural disasters, and major political developments with clarity and composure. She's anchored rolling coverage for major events including terrorist attacks, flood emergencies, bushfires, Covid, the war in Ukraine, and the death of the Queen.

Karina is particularly proud of the stories she’s told about everyday Australians, those navigating floods, rebuilding after loss, or forging new lives as refugees. Her interviews span from world leaders and bestselling authors to people whose voices often go unheard.

Currently presenting Mornings on the ABC News Channel, Karina balances journalistic integrity with a deep empathy for the human experience. Off-air, she’s a passionate follower of cricket, rugby, the arts, and a devoted home cook who believes in the power of shared meals.
