One of the most exciting players of his era, Dermott’s flamboyance endeared him to fans and infuriated his rivals. During Hawthorn FC’s golden era in the 1980s and early 1990s, he won them five-day and five-night premierships. He revelled in the heat of battle throughout his AFL career, playing over 200 games and kicking a total of 464 goals. Dermott is widely regarded as one of the best centre-half forwards of all time.

He won Hawthorn’s best and fairest in 1985 and has represented Victoria nine times.

In 1999, Dermott was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.

After retiring from the AFL, Dermott forged an enormously successful media career as a television presenter, football commentator, newspaper columnist, and radio host. Throughout his acclaimed twenty-year association at Channel Nine, he hosted and commentated for Channel Nine’s Friday Night Football and served as a regular panellist for the AFL Footy Show and Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

Dermott also hosted Channel Seven’s primetime football program, The Game, for two years. In addition, he also hosted Sportsworld nationally and played an integral part in Channel Seven’s coverage of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In 2007, Dermott joined the cast of the award-winning Channel Nine primetime travel show, Getaway, successfully transitioning from a renowned sports personality to a national primetime lifestyle host. 

Today, Dermott also continues his activities as a leading football media identity, as one of the key members of SEN radio's AFL commentary team. He also provides match commentary and is a host at Foxtel’s Fox Footy, Dermie Delivers and Saturday Countdown.

A highly sought-after speaker, Dermott has emceed and spoken at numerous corporate and sporting functions. His clients include Telstra, Melbourne Storm and the Financial Planners Association. He is the quintessential Aussie larrikin with his onscreen success serving as a testament to his warm personality and love of adventure. He has also been involved in various marketing and advertising campaigns over the years for brands such as Bundaberg Rum, Stihl, Tip Top Bread, Adidas, Tabcorp, Toyota, Coca Cola and Myer Melbourne.
