Global Journalist, War Reporter & Co-Host of Weekend Sunrise

David Woiwod is Co-Host of Australia’s #1 weekend breakfast show, Weekend Sunrise. 

The seasoned broadcaster spent five years as 7NEWSUS Bureau Chief, reporting from war zones and the White House covering the biggest global stories of the past decade.

With a Masters degree in International Relations, Woiwod is an experienced foreign correspondent and journalist. Notably, he led 7NEWS’ coverage of the war in Israel, having faced rocket fire from Hamas while reporting live on air from the Gaza border.

As US Bureau Chief, Woiwod helmed 7NEWS’ 2024 US Presidential election coverage including Donald Trump’s assistantion attempt and ultimate victory, Joe Biden’s sensational withdrawal and Kamala Harris’ historic white house run.

His journalistic work has explored every angle of American life, including space launches, school shootings, race riots, natural disasters, immigration, abortion rights as well as major sporting events like the Super Bowl.

He’s been a Hollywood red carpet regular, rubbing shoulders with stars at the Oscars, Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. He has interviewed big names such as Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, Mariah Carey, Will Ferrell and Robbie Williams. 

Woiwod gained exclusive access to Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay for the Bali Bomber’s court appearance and was notably the only Australian journalist on the ground during Canada’s Titan submersible tragedy.

His longform storytelling has been featured on 7NEWS’ Spotlight, including investigative reporting into America’s confronting drug epidemic. He has also been a regular columnist for The Nightly, offering original insights and commentary to more than 2.84 million readers.

Other global events have seen Woiwod reporting live from London during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral procession and at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China under strict COVID isolation. In 2019 Woiwod also led Sunrise’s coverage of New Zealand's White Island volcanic explosion tragedy and Australia’s Black Summer bushfires. 

He has previously worked for The Associated Press, Sky News UK and Network Ten.

Hailing from Melbourne, Woiwod now lives in Sydney where he is a keen open water ocean swimmer and wannabe chef.
