Tarang Chawla

Championing Justice and Equality Against Domestic Violence

Tarang Chawla is an influential advocate, keynote speaker, and writer dedicated to advancing social justice and ending violence against women. His journey into advocacy was catalysed by a profound personal tragedy: the murder of his sister Nikita in 2015, a victim of domestic violence. In response, Tarang co-founded ‘Not One More Niki’, a movement committed to eradicating men’s violence against women. Tarang’s inspirational story is a heartwarming tale of overcoming adversity and rising above personal mental health struggles by advocating for a better world.

As a Commissioner at the Victorian Multicultural Commission and a seasonal academic at Monash University, Tarang plays a pivotal role in shaping policy and community responses to domestic violence. He has served in significant board and committees, including the Victorian Victim Survivors’ Advisory Council and the Ministerial Taskforce for the Prevention of Family Violence, where he advises state and national governments on effective strategies.

Tarang’s impact extends far beyond his roles in governance. Recognised as a Young Australian of the Year Finalist in 2017, he is also an Ambassador for Victoria Against Violence, White Ribbon, Our Watch, InTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence, and Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre, amplifying his advocacy through multiple platforms where he works with young men to support them to adopt new models of masculinity that don't lead to violence. Tarang’s work challenges societal norms around masculinity and advocates for gender equality, reflected in his writings on discrimination, racism, and human rights.

In addition to his advocacy and academic pursuits, Tarang is a highly sought-after speaker and media commentator, engaging diverse audiences through his compelling storytelling and deep expertise. His efforts have earned him accolades such as being named one of Australia’s Top 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australians and receiving the Impact 25 Award for his significant contributions to social change.

Tarang’s commitment to justice and his ability to blend personal experience with scholarly insights make him a compelling voice in the globa, movement for gender equality and social justice. His work continues to inspire communities to take action and foster meaningful change, while reminding us of the importance of making the most of every day.
