Disability conqueror, championing equality and accessibility
Ross Chaplin’s journey epitomises resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to advocating for equality, inclusive design, and accessibility for those with disabilities. At the age of two, Ross faced a life-changing challenge when he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Disease, leaving him paralysed and with a failing respiratory system. Against daunting odds, his mother refused to accept the likely outcome, instilling in Ross a spirit of determination and perseverance that would define his life’s trajectory.
Despite the physical limitations imposed by his disability, Ross pursued his education in mainstream primary and secondary schools, navigating through environments often inaccessible to him. Nevertheless, he graduated from his high school, setting the stage for a future marked by resilience and achievement.
Ross’s passion for property emerged early in his life, and after completing his qualifications, he embarked on a challenging journey to secure employment in a field notorious for its lack of accommodation for people with disabilities. Despite facing numerous rejections, Ross’s determination saw him eventually finding employment and gaining valuable experience in the property sector.
In 1998, Ross took a bold leap into entrepreneurship, founding ‘Chaplin Investment Management’ (CIM) with a focus on property management and consultancy. Though the initial venture faced setbacks, Ross’s unwavering dedication and innovative approach saw him successfully build and sell multiple businesses, providing financial stability for his growing family.
However, it was in 2016 that Ross’s trajectory took a transformative turn. A call from a CEO of a NDIS organisation presented a new opportunity to apply his expertise in negotiating commercial leases. Recognising the critical need for representation within the NFP/NDIS sector, Ross pivoted his focus exclusively to providing property services for these organisations.
Joining ‘Franklin Shanks’ who specialise in the portfolio management of large-scale retail, commercial and industrial lease holders, Ross became a pivotal figure in advising NDIS organisations on property strategies, emphasising cost savings and operational optimisation. His transition to Franklin Shanks not only marked a professional milestone but also fostered his deep commitment to serving the community and advocating for disability rights.
Beyond his professional endeavours, Ross’s life is a testament to his indomitable spirit. As an elite sportsman, he represented NSW and Australia in target rifle shooting and continues to excel as a hand cyclist, logging over 100km weekly. Ross’s passion for exploration has seen him and his family travel to over 24 countries, enriching their lives with diverse experiences and perspectives.
As a highly sought-after keynote speaker, Ross’s story serves as an inspiration, illustrating the transformative power of resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible world for all.
