Full Presenter Profile & Bio

As the SBS authority on all things cycling and an award-winning journalist, Michael Tomalaris is the face of the Tour de France, having covered the event for SBS annually since 1996.

In 2011, Michael delivered one of the biggest moments in sport to audiences across the country when Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France. Michael covered Cadel’s historic ride along the Champs-Élysées, and his three-week journey to that point, with the perfect mix of professionalism and emotion that the occasion demanded.

Michael’s contribution to the coverage of cycling was recognised when he won the Australian Sports Commission Media Award for Best Coverage of Sport by an Individual (Broadcast Media) in the same year the network was nominated for a Logie for its coverage of the world’s biggest and most prestigious cycle race.

With close to 25 experience as a sports and news journalist, Michael has reported on the world’s biggest events including the FIFA World Cup, The Olympic Games and the Giro d'Italia.

2019 is Michael’s 24th year hosting the Tour de France on SBS. Among his role as MC he has hosted many international events over the years. These include official functions for the AIS in Canberra, season launches for Orica-GreenEDGE Pro-cycling team,  the Asia-Pacific Cycle Congress, and for SBS – program launches held for Federal Members of Parliament.

As an integral member of SBS for a quarter of a century, Michael has become a familiar face of SBS, to the point that viewers say they feel relaxed and comfortable with his on-air presence and professionalism. He also slots into the role of the multicultural national broadcaster's highly prestigious nightly international news service. These polished characteristics are translated when he takes to a room as an MC.

Michael also has a particular interest in multicultural issues and is interested to MC functions and events for communities of varied ethnic backgrounds. Michael can share his passion for sport, news and current affairs, while as an MC he is able to translate the requirements needed to engage an audience for any function.
