The SBS authority on all things cycling, award-winning journalist Michael Tomalaris is the face of the Tour de France, having covered the event for SBS since 1996. In 2011 Michael delivered one of the biggest moments in sport to audiences across the country when Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France. Michael covered Cadel’s historic ride along the Champs-Élysées, and his three-week journey to that point, with the perfect mix of professionalism and emotion that the occasion demanded.
Michael’s contribution to the coverage of cycling was recognised in 2011 when he won the Australian Sports Commission Media Award for Best Coverage of Sport by an Individual (Broadcast Media) in the same year the network was nominated for a Logie for its coverage of the world’s biggest and most prestigious cycle race.
With close to 20 years experience as a cycling journalist, Michael has reported on the world’s biggest cycling events including the Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana and the Tour Down Under. He is the host of SBS’s weekly cycling program, Cycling Central, which delivers the latest two wheel action from around the world. On top of covering the busy world cycling calendar, Michael is a senior sports journalist and presenter for SBS’ flagship nightly news service, World News Australia.
He cut his teeth in sports journalism as a member of the SBS team that covered the FIFA World Cup on location in the United States in 1994 and France in 1998, and has been involved in the network’s extensive coverage ever since as a host from the Sydney studio.
2015 is Michael’s 20th year hosting the Tour de France on SBS.
Among his role as MC he has hosted many international events over the years. More recently they have included official functions for the AIS in Canberra, season launches for Orica-GreenEDGE Pro-cycling team, the Asia-Pacific Cycle Congress on the Gold Coast, and for SBS – program launches held for Federal Members of Parliament.
Michael can share his passion for a sport that has captured the imagination of Australia’s television audience, while as an MC he is able to translate the requirements needed to engage an audience for any function.
