Lieutenant Commander Kelly Haywood joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1997 as a Combat Systems Operator. After completing her Basic Combat Systems Operators Course, she posted to the Submarine Warfare Systems Centre before taking up her first sea posting in HMAS Kanimbla in 1998.
After various international exercises and an operational posting to Solomon Islands on Operation Trek, Kelly posted to HMAS ANZAC in 2001 to broaden her expertise. This posting saw her complete a four month deployment to Christmas Island as part of Operation Relex.
Kelly was promoted to Leading Seaman in 2002 and posted to HMAS Stuart in 2003, where again she was involved with border protection operations during Operation Resolute and deployed to the Middle East for Operation Catalyst in 2004. During the deployment, the then Leading Seaman Haywood received a Commanding Officer’s Commendation for her efforts whilst deployed.
Discovering throughout her Naval career that her true passion was in logistics, Kelly changed over to a commissioned Maritime Logistics Officer in 2005. Kelly completed her Assistant Maritime Logistics Officer tenure in HMAS Success where she again deployed to Operation Resolute. On completion of her Supply Application Course, Kelly received the Peter Mitchell Prize for Academic Excellence and received the Huw Pafford Memorial Award for best contributor to the Junior Officer Leadership Course.
After postings as Supply Officer (Tenders) Cairns in 2007, Kelly then gained exposure to Joint Logistic Command with positions as OIC Logistic Support (DNSDC Moorebank) and Operation Officer (JLU-W). In her tenure as Operations Officer at JLU-W, Kelly received a Commanding Officer’s Commendation for her management of the movement of the LR5 Submarine Search and Rescue Vehicle from Glasgow, Scotland to Perth, Australia.
In 2010 Kelly was posted as the Deputy Supply Officer in HMAS Toowoomba, deploying to Operation Slipper in 2011. On completion of this deployment, the then Lieutenant Haywood received a Silver CJTF 633 Silver Commendation for her performance whilst deployed. The same year, Kelly was nominated for the Lord Nelson Sword of Excellence.
Kelly then posted to the ANZAC Systems Program Office as Materiel Support Manager from Dec 2011 – September 2013. During this time she was responsible for the entire logistics organisation of the Anti-Ship Missile Defence Project. For her efforts, Kelly was nominated for the Telstra Western Australia Young Business Woman of the Year Award which she won on the 20th September 2013 and took out the National title on 14th November 2014.
Kelly completed her studies at the Australian Maritime College in 2013, graduating with a Bachelor of Business in Maritime Logistics and Management.
LCDR Kelly Haywood is now posted as the Maritime Logistics Officer in HMAS Toowoomba.
