Leading Bostonian hero dedicated to improving youth health and wellbeing

A physician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr Natalie Stavas has dedicated her professional career towards improving the health and wellbeing of children across the world. A leading researcher and advocate, Dr Stavas is a highly sought-after expert when it comes to systemic issues affecting youths.

Dr Stavas completed her education at Harvard University and Boston Children’s Hospital. Specialising in improving the health of vulnerable children, tackling youth violence and teenage pregnancies, Dr Stavas received the 2012 Change Maker Award from The Boston Foundation for her work as a community leader and educator.

In 2013, Dr Stavas was completing her fifth Boston marathon when she heard explosions mere blocks away. Immediately running towards danger, Dr Stavas arrived at the scene to apply her medical training, administering first-aid and triaging injured victims.

For her selfless heroism, she was honoured by President Barack Obama, Katie Couric, and Anderson Cooper. Named one of “Boston’s Best” by Improper Bostonian magazine, Dr Stavas was also awarded “2013 Bostonian of the Year" by The Boston Globe.

Immediately after the Boston bombings, Dr Stavas pivoted her career towards preventing childhood violence. As a weekly contributor for Boston 25 News, she discusses pertinent issues affecting children and young adults. She is also a mentor for Sole Train, a non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring youths to reach their full potential through running.

She continues to pioneer new avenues for improving pediatrics. In 2014, she formed a partnership between Prescription for the Outdoors with the pediatric team at Boston Medical Centre, encouraging more engagement with nature as a form of therapy. Outside of the US, Dr Stavas has travelled to Haiti to provide crucial medical care to children and improve Haiti’s fragile medical systems.

Currently leading University of California’s Child Protection Pediatrics program, Dr Stavas is inspiring the future of the medical industry. With her award-winning research into vulnerable children, Dr Stavas has also explored the impact of COVID-19 on youth’s health and wellbeing.
