Antoinette Braybrook
Leading expert on family violence prevention within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
Born in the Wurundjeri country to the Kuku Yalanji People, Antoinette Braybrook is an Aboriginal woman who is the leading advocate for family violence prevention in Indigenous communities.
As the CEO of Djirra since 2002, Antoinette has been instrumental in providing a safe and inclusive support network for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are victims of domestic violence. With a series of legal and non-legal support services, as well as widespread implementation of community programs and policy reform, Djirra has been at the forefront of building resilience and reducing violence within vulnerable communities in Australia.
Antoinette continues to advocate in this field across a series of advisory groups, expert panels, and even at the 2019 United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva. She is also the Co-Chair of Change the Record, Australia’s only national First Nations led campaign organised by top legal, health and family violence prevention experts.
Recognised nationally for her community work, Antoinette has been inducted in the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2020, and as the Victorian recipient of the 2022 Australian Awards of Excellence in Women’s Leadership. She has also been honoured on the UN Gender Justice Legacy Wall in 2017, as well as the Melburnian of the Year 2022.
