Multicultural Advocate, Educator and AFLW Trailblazer
Ashara Wills is a multicultural professional whose lived experiences have shaped her personal and professional journey. Identifying as queer from a young age, she has navigated a range of complexities, experiencing both the challenges and triumphs along the way. Grounded in the community services sector, Ashara has built a strong foundation of support through her family, friends, and professional networks.
A consistent advocate for the LGBTIQA+ community, Ashara can be seen actively engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing knowledge, consulting with the community, and passionately embracing differences. Most recently, in recognition of her leadership and impact, Ashara was awarded the 2025 Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA Diversity & Inclusion LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Award category. This outstanding achievement acknowledges her contribution to advancing inclusive practice across workplaces and communities.
Ashara’s motivation lies in developing strategic educational training programs and working holistic, healthy environments that promote substantial changes. Her presentations are engaging and fun, inviting listeners to think deeper about LGBTIQA+ communities and how they can go beyond being ‘box ticking’ allies in any environment.
Ashara has also left a significant mark on Australian Rules Football (AFL). As a driving force behind the West Coast Eagles' establishment of an AFLW team, she became the club’s first registered female coach, helping to break down barriers within a traditionally male-dominated space.
Ashara’s journey into the elite levels of AFL began through her role as an Alex Jesaulenko Coaching Intern, reflecting both her resilience and deep commitment to the game. She fearlessly challenged long-standing gender norms and helped open pathways for future generations of women in the sport.
Beyond the sidelines, Ashara's influence is evident in her sharp strategic insights and innovative coaching approach, which have contributed to the development and success of multiple football clubs. Her work represents a shift within the coaching landscape, where merit and skill take precedent over unconscious boundaries.
Off the field, Ashara is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion across sport and beyond. Her efforts to promote equity have sparked crucial conversations and catalysed change within the AFL community. As a mentor and role model, she continues to inspire emerging coaches and players of all backgrounds to dream big and challenge the status quo. Ashara Wills is not only a coach, but a transformative force for progress shaping the future of AFL and beyond.
