Toby Walsh

Toby Walsh is a leading researcher in Artificial Intelligence and the digital revolution 

Toby Walsh is a Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and a research leader at CSIRO's Data61. He also works as an external professor of the Department of Information Science at Uppsala University and as an adjunct professor at QUT. Toby has a B.A. from the University of Cambridge and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from the University of Edinburgh, and received recognition from Australian newspaper as one of the "rock stars" of Australia's digital revolution. 

Professor Walsh is a strong advocate for enforcing limits that ensure AI is used only to improve people’s lives. He has been a leading voice in the discussion surrounding killer robots, has spoken at the UN, as well as to heads of state, parliamentary bodies, company boards and many others. 

Toby is an honorary fellow of a multitude of institutions for his research in artificial intelligence and service to the community. Inlcuding the School of Informatics at Edinburgh University, the Australian Academy of Science, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the Association of Computing Machinery, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and the European Coordinating Committee for AI. 

Toby can also be seen as an Associate Member of the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW. He was acknowledged on the international "Who's Who in AI" list of influencers, and his twitter account has been voted in the top ten to follow to keep abreast of developments in AI. He has been presented with numerous accolades for his impactful work, winning both the Humboldt Prize and the NSW Premier's Prize for Excellence in Engineering and ICT. He was the recipient of the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellende in Engineering and ICT, the Humbolt Award, the Award of the Association for Constraint Programming, and more. 

Toby was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of AI Communications, and of Artificial Intelligence Research, and is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of the ACM. He has worked as Secretary of the Association for Constraint Programming (ACP), and is currently the Editor of the newsletter of the ACP, CP News. At the main conferences in Constraint Programming, Automated Reasoning and Artificial intelligence, Toby could be seen as the Program and Conference Chair.

Toby has given countless talks at public and trade events like CeBIT, the World Knowledge Forum, TEDx, New Scientist Live, as well as at writers festivals in various Australian cities. He can be seen making regular appearances on both TV and radio, and has been profiled by the New York Times. Toby is the author of three books on AI for a general audience including, Faking It! AI in a Human World, 2062, and his most recent, Machines Behaving Badly, published in 2022. Toby’s abundance of knowledge surrounding the world of AI allows him to captivate and inspire any audience.
