Greg Hire

Advocating for better mental health as the former Vice-Captain of the Perth Wildcats

As the former Vice-Captain of the NBL's Perth Wildcats, Greg Hire remains a strong advocate for mental health among Australian youths.

Greg began his basketball career with the Wanneroo Wolves, progressing through the State Basketball League until he won the 2006 SBL Rookie of the Year award. After completing his college education at Miles City Community College and Augusta State University, he returned from the US to resume his commitments with Wanneroo Wolves, before moving to the Perth Wildcats as a Development Player.

Making his NBL debut in 2010, Greg quickly captained and starred in the Championship by 2011, where he took out the Grand Final MVP with 31 points and 28 rebounds. Since then, Greg continued to shine as a leading member of the Perth Wildcats, taking the team to win after win up until his retirement in 2019. He made his way into the starting line-up, was introduced into the leadership group, and was also involved in the Boomers Training Camp thanks to his high work ethic and commitment to improvement.

In 2013, Greg was appointed Vice-Captain alongside Shawn Redhage.

2014 marked another stellar year for Greg. Not only did he reach his 100th NBL game, but he was also crowned NBL Champions of the Season and received Grand Final MVP voting recognition. In his personal life, Greg married his long-term partner Ainsleigh Sanders.

By 2016, Greg played his 150th game for the team, and helped bring the winning team to victory through the 2015-2018 NBL Championships.

Inspired by his own upbringing, Greg supports youths struggling with mental health as a passionate ambassador for Youth Focus. He was awarded a Pride of Australia Medal in the ‘Inspiration’ category, and was also named as the 2018 West Australian of the Year in the Youth Category for his work on youth suicide prevention.

With extensive leadership and coaching experience, Greg has been delivering engaging keynote presentations across sporting, business and community sectors. He is an inspiring role model for any Australian, not just for his determination and work ethic, but for his focus on community support and mental health awareness.
