Kathy and the Kelly family are indisputably victims of the ever-increasing violence in our country. Kathy is the mother of the young 18 year old, Thomas Kelly who was murdered in an unprovoked attack in Sydney’s Kings Cross in July 2012.
From that unimaginable phone call from the Emergency Department at St. Vincent’s Hospital, to let them know that Thomas had been injured and they needed to come immediately to be by his side - Kelly soon learnt that they had to fight every step of the way for justice for their son - from the Local Court to the Supreme Court and finally the High Court of Australia.
Tragically, all too often victim voices are never heard in our courts.
From a sense of overwhelming loss and grief came anger and from anger came determination. The kind of determination fuelled by only those who know what it’s like to suffer such pain and indignation.
The Kelly’s like so many in the community wanted to see positive change.
Starting The “Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation” in 2013, its aim is two fold:
- “Getting our children home safely” through prevention and,
- Longer-term behavioral change.
In 2014, the Foundation achieved many milestones including: the installation of an additional 11 CCTV cameras in the city, numerous amendments to the NSW Sentencing Act to make it fairer for victims, the initiation of the Sydney “Take Kare, Safe Space” program every Friday & Saturday night, as well as advocacy for the locks outs and last drinks, to name a few.
The Foundation has key partnerships cross the city and meet regularly with the NSW Government’s Premier and Attorney General.
