Ric Marks

Ric Marks is a keynote speaker, author and leadership practitioner focused on one of the least examined pressures in modern leadership: the gradual concentration of responsibility, judgement and decision making around capable people. He is the creator of Load-Bearing Leadership™ and the founder of Ultimate Marks.

Ric's flagship body of work, Leadership Under Load, helps leaders recognise the load they carry, 
understand why it keeps returning, and build leadership that is shared rather than concentrated. His work challenges the assumption that leadership pressure is primarily a personal resilience problem. Instead, he helps leaders examine the practical conditions that repeatedly recreate pressure: unclear authority, decision drag, hidden coordination work, escalation habits, dependency and responsibility without sufficient support.

His perspective has been shaped through leadership roles across government, corporate technology, 
service delivery, infrastructure, operations and business ownership. In those environments, Ric repeatedly observed capable leaders becoming the fallback point for decisions, exceptions, ambiguity and risk. The immediate response was often to ask those leaders to delegate more, manage time better or become more resilient. Yet the underlying conditions remained unchanged, causing the same pressure to return. Load-Bearing Leadership™ gives leaders a practical framework for understanding that pattern. It begins with the individual leader and the load they are carrying. It then examines how the team experiences that load through hesitation, escalation, approval-seeking or reduced ownership. Finally, it looks at the surrounding structure - including authority, accountability, trust, support and decision rights - to identify what continues to reinforce the pattern.
